What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?
An LPA is a legal document that lets you choose people you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you ever lose the capacity to make them yourself. There are two types: Property & Financial Affairs, and Health & Welfare. Most people put both in place.
Do I need one type of LPA or both?
They cover different decisions. Property & Financial Affairs covers banking, bills, pensions, benefits and property. Health & Welfare covers where you live, your day-to-day care and medical treatment. Most people put both in place, and if you do, your simple Will is free.
How long does registration take?
Once signed and witnessed, the LPA is sent to the Office of the Public Guardian for registration. That currently takes around 12 weeks, and the LPA cannot be used until it is registered — which is why it is worth doing well before it is needed.
What is the £92 OPG fee?
The Office of the Public Guardian charges £92 to register each LPA. It is a government fee paid directly to them and is separate from our price. If you are on a low income or certain benefits you may qualify for a reduction or exemption.
How do I get my free Will?
Put both types of Lasting Power of Attorney in place — property & financial affairs and health & welfare — and your simple Will is free. Do your LPAs first: once your LPA payment has gone through we email you a discount code. Sign in to your account, work through the Will questions, and enter the code at the payment step to bring the £50 down to nothing.
The code is unique to you and can be used once. It cannot be applied to a Will you have already paid for.
Can I really do it all myself online?
Yes. The questionnaire is written in plain English. Your answers are merged into the official forms and checked by our team before they reach you — you are never left with a blank form and no guidance.
Do I have to pay before I start?
No. You can work through every question and check your answers first. Payment is the last step, before your documents are prepared.
Can I save my progress and come back?
Yes. You set up a free account when you begin, and from then on every answer is saved as you go. Close the page and pick up where you left off.
Who checks my documents?
Every document is personally checked by Benjamin Gilbert. Your documents are read line by line by a person, not signed off by software.
Do I need a Will as well as an LPA?
They do different jobs: an LPA covers decisions while you are alive, a Will covers what happens afterwards. We can draft a Will alongside your LPA for £50, and if you put both types of LPA in place your simple Will is free, so both are in place together.
Can I change or cancel it later?
As long as you still have mental capacity you can revoke an LPA or make a new one at any time. Life changes — new attorneys, new circumstances — and your documents can change with it.
What happens after I complete the questionnaire?
We prepare your documents from your answers. A member of our team checks them before anything is released. Once approved, we email you a secure sign-in link so you can download everything from your account, together with written instructions on signing and witnessing.
You then post the signed originals back to us. We check them, store signed Wills free of charge, and submit LPAs to the Office of the Public Guardian for registration.
Is my information secure?
Your answers are encrypted in transit and at rest, and are only ever seen by the people drafting and checking your documents. We never sell or share your data.
